Is Chicago Comic Con becoming SDCC Circa 2000?

Filed under: Chicago Comic Con: 2012,General,shows — webjon @ 8:09 pm

I really can’t think of a better compliment than to wonder if Chicago Comic Con is becoming everything that made San Diego great. . . for me the pinnacle of the SDCC was years ago, when you could still actually go to the panels you wanted to see, and walk down at least some of the aisles.

Certainly Chicago won’t meet the scope of SDCC, the hall isn’t large enough, and they don’t seem to have the corporate backing that you see at SDCC, so I don’t think we’re going to see movie premiers and things of that nature quite yet (I wouldn’t be surprised to see premiers soon). . .

I didn’t even realize that Wizard had their Chicago plans cranking yet. . . an NSCFer mentioned that the folks from Boondock Saints was going to be at Chicago, so I checked out the site and I was blown away by the guest list. . . Of course there are stars from Star Trek (Shatner! Kate Mulgrew! Jeri Ryan!!!), some convention favorites (Bruce Campbell!), as well as comic artists galore. . . but this show shines with celebrity. . . Hayden Panettiere! Holly-Marie Combs!! . . . honestly I could keep naming people and still do a disservice to the list. . . the roster is *that* good . . . and while I have had a crush on Holly-Marie Combs since I first watched Charmed — and while I was shocked to see her name, she wasn’t the biggest surprise on the list. . .

For some reason Wizard is going all fantasy artist on us in 2012. . . they’ve got Brom, Clyde Caldwell, Ken Kelly and Arthur Suydam all listed as guests! Who knows who else will show up at dealer booths. . . I can’t even begin to describe how jazzed I am for Chicon 2012! Perhaps I’ll even be able to avenge an eBay loss from about 10 years ago. . .

I was watching this Brom painting. . . and I wasn’t sure it was legit, it was a little guy so it wasn’t all that expensive, but it was sooooo cool. I thought it was probably authentic, so I scraped my quarters together and bid what I could. . . Brom himself (or at least his official eBay account) bought the art. . . I knew at that point it was legit, but I never had another opportunity to pick up a Brom piece since then. . . maybe 2012 is my year. . .

Check out the Chicago Comic Con Site and make your plans now. . .

See you at the show!

eBay item 270909993428 — Topps American Pie Buyback autograph. . . well that’s what it supposedly is. . .

It’s got a bad hologram, and a bad signature. . . This article has detailed analysis of these buyback autographs. . .

There are so many fakes of this buyback you could probably put a set of ‘em together. . .

Reprint Autograph, Replica Swatch — COA Included!

I started seeing these popping up on eBay lately, and after reading the back my face looked a lot like Elvis’s face shown above (that’s the best picture they could find, really?). The back on these things is classic. . .

Hey, at least it’s not trying to pretend it’s legitimate. . .

So, what do you think. . . do you care that these are certainly unlicensed, unauthorized cards, and everything about them is fake. . . Personally I’m tired of caring, I don’t see manufacturers or license holders complaining or doing anything about it. . . And, honestly, besides the horrible pick above they are kinda nice. . . Check out Marilyn Monroe, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix below — they’ve got a host more of ‘em too!
