Walking Dead Patch Redemption Counterfeited. . .

Big time cards bring big time scams apparently, as a Blowoutcards.com Forum member found out when they received a counterfeit redemption card for a patch from Cryptozoic’s Walking Dead release. The seller of this card was aprilsportscollectibles on ebay, who has sold several other counterfeit cards, including a fake Hulk Hogan autograph to a NonSportsCardForum.com member. Seems to be that something shady is going on at the casa de AprilSportsCollectibles, and it also sounds like this fake card was made in the same way as the fake Hogan, both were pretty obviously home made when the arrived with the wrong stock, gloss, texture and even sticky edges where the card was glued together.

It is slightly puzzling that someone would counterfeit a redemption card like this since it is one of a kind and obviously even if the buyer didn’t figure it would Cryptozic would have when they received it for redemption.

I hope this counterfeiter gets jail time. . . but somehow I doubt it.

Questionable Affleck Autos on eBay. . .

Thank you to the webjon reader that pointed out eBay auctions # 300629905002 and
# 220906612592. They felt that these two Ben Affleck Daredevil autographs from Topps looked a little too similar:

I took the scans and compared the signatures, and sure enough the autographs are an exact match to each other — line by line, stroke by stroke.

Of course it is possible that Affleck just has a really steady hand, but more than likely something is up here. . . I decided to dig a little further when I realized that the following scan was posted on Webjon back in 2009:

The first thing you will notice about this scan is that it, too, is an exact match of the signatures above. Perhaps it is the same card being sold again, but the important thing about this card is that it was sold by known counterfeit card seller loveandnewyork.

I’d steer clear of these cards, even the card graded by Beckett, this certainly isn’t the first questionable card they’ve slabbed. Beckett reps on Card Talk said that they would take care of anyone who bought a BGS card that turned out to be fake, so there may be some help for this seller. . .

American Pie Revisited. . . Adam West, Lou Ferrigno and Danny Bonaduce Fakes.

Finally some confirmation on these from an American Pie collector! Buyback autographs are a really cool concept, except for one thing — they are incredibly easy to fake. We’ve talked about a couple of questionable Danny Bonaduce buybacks on Webjon, and knew there were fakes out there. A collector contacted me through webjon with the straight scoop on these:

All of these IF GENUINE will have a CIRCULAR Topps hologram sticker on the reverse starting with the number 016 and it will also have the number xxx/500.

So, as was suspected in previous posts the ‘nice’ signature Bonaduce cards with the square holograms are fake.

My contact provided a lot of great information, but the thing that struck me the most was that in our couple of weeks of correspondence he kept pointing out fake after fake on eBay. There certainly appear to be a number of sellers who are cranking out the fakes. . . here are three fake Ferrigno’s for example: eBay items: 270778853900, 280705317540, 170663108091 and an Adam West 270786520903.

If you’ll notice all of these sellers have great feedback. Feedback, is essentially useless for determining if a seller is pushing counterfeit goods. . . the people who know the items are fake avoid ‘em, and the buyers generally don’t find out until it’s too late.

While I would avoid these sellers, I think it’s important to be able to identify the fakes from the legitimate cards as a legitimate seller may end up with some of these down the road as they change hands. . . Obviously, the key is the hologram, as described above, here is a scan of a legitimate hologram:

Step number two is to know the autograph — here is a set of legitimate American Pie autographs:

And finally, an up close and personal look with each legitimate autograph right next to one from one of the fake cards:

An extra special thank you to our tipster, who wishes to remain anonymous. If you have any additional questions please comment or email and I will try to get them answered.

Happy Collecting,

Jon
