Wizard World Sneaks Up On the Windy City.

Filed under: shows — webjon @ 7:03 pm

Wizard World Chicago Comic Con starts in a few days. . . I’ve been preoccupied with other major things in life lately and even though it’s been on the calendar for months it came up out of the blue for me.

Surprisingly 2010 seems to be the year that 2 things are happening. First Wizard is really upping the ante, they have been ON TOP of communication this year. I’ve been getting emails from them for months. Their guest list is INSANE, not only is the guest list HUGE, but the guests are impressive as well — far more and better than I ever remember for the Chicago Comic Con in the 16 years I’ve been going. . . so the show looks great. Unfortunately the 2nd thing is also happening.

That 2nd thing is that 2010 seems to be the year that collectors aren’t jazzed about shows. On the one hand it’s hard to blame them. The economy sucks, yet everything is getting more expensive, plus most shows have been on a decline for the last few years. . . on the other hand this year’s Chi-Con looks great, and if folks don’t turn out it’ll be a shame.

For better or worse the Collector Blah’s have hit virtually all shows this year. . . Chatter about SDCC was WAY down from previous years, and the chatter that did come out of that show seem more muted than it has been. Dragon Con is just around the corner and no one is even talking about it on the boards I look at.

While I am looking forward to the show my interest lies in the dealer and art areas. . . and if the retailer section at Wizard’s site is accurate it’s going to be a very light year for cards — lots of artists will be in attendance though so who knows. We’ll find out soon enough — see you at the show.
